The world wide project ‘Thanks for Life – Polio Eradication’ dominated February for Wessex Mead Rotarians.  But we did find time to have some fun this month by means of a pub of the quarter and a ‘ghost walk’ around Frome town centre lead ably by Rotarian Ann Jones.  It was a very cold evening and the stories sent shivers down our spines, so we were glad to end up with a hot drink at the end of the evening in a local hotel.

Ann had also arranged with Trowbridge Library to display the photographs taken by entrants to our Young Photographer competition – this display lasted a fortnight in the main library.

Thanks for Life

The world wide project ‘Thanks for Life – Polio Eradication’ dominated February for Wessex mead Rotarians. Caroline Smyth took on coordinating the Big Breakfast event, which took place at the Scout Headquarters in Southwick. During the month she was finding out the best deals for breakfast items amongst the supermarkets in Trowbridge and working out how much we needed as the paying guest list gradually grew to over 100. Members of the club generously donated raffle prizes, and took part on the day either as a cook, washer-upper/tea/coffee/toast-maker or front of house staff. We started cooking at 8am and our last guest left at 1pm when we were all exhausted, but all agreed what a great team we made raising over £475 – amazing when our guests had only paid £5 per head for the full breakfast works!

The Thanks for life project ran for the week starting 21st February, we worked with Trowbridge Rotary to have a ‘Window of Opportunity’ to display information about Polio Eradication in the Shires Shopping Centre. This window was generously donated to us for the week and we thank the Shires management for the facility. "When a child is immunized they are given a purple mark on their finger so that they do not join the queue again to get a second dose. This is known as the Purple Pinkie. To highlight this Wiltshire Council and SLR Consultancy in Bradford on Avon held a wear something purple to work day on Rotary day 23rd February. This raised over £650. Finally Trowbridge Rotary and Wessex Mead Rotary joined forces again to collect and promote at Tesco on Saturday 27th February.
