As the dark nights draw in, the annual traditions of Fireworks and Remembrance were key to the November activities at Wessex Mead Rotary. Every year the Rotary Club of Chippenham holds a grand Firework Display at Monkton Park. This year the weather was perfect for the bonfire and nearly half an hour of amazing fireworks. Members of the Wessex Mead were there too, on the gates, fire duty and marshalling. This is always a fun event to support and over £8000 was raised for local charities! This year we were invited to be involved with Trowbridge Town’s Remembrance service and I laid a wreath at the War memorial on behalf of Rotary. It was a respectful event which many people and organizations in the town supported. Some members of the club also helped the Royal Legion by selling poppies in Trowbridge leading up to Remembrance Sunday. Our social evenings this month were away from our normal meeting place at Red or White. As a club, we enjoyed an evening of fireworks and supper at a member’s home on the Monday evening after the main firework displays. The other Monday we made up a team to play skittles in the Rotary league against Devizes Rotary Club, sadly we lost, so Devizes Rotary Club go on to the next round, but it was a good evening with friendly rivalry. Some of us will be visiting them again in December, when they celebrate 50 years since the Devizes Rotary Club was chartered. We also had the opportunity of visiting Shaftesbury Court with Trowbridge Carnival Committee to present them with a Cheque towards a new minibus – this included the money that we raised at the Fish and Chip Quiz Night that was held in September. It was lovely to meet some of the residents, and we were made to feel very welcome. Coming up in December, we will be out and about in Trowbridge. We will be collecting with Father Christmas and Trowbridge Lions on Mondays 7th and 14th December, and we will be helping Trowbridge Rotary to collect in the Shires on other selected sessions. On Wednesday 23rd December we will be at Trowbridge Tesco, come and say hello as again we will be collecting for local charities – you may well see a penguin or two, or even a Mother Christmas! |
