August was a month of food, food to eat and food for thought!
The Wessex Mead Young Chef cooked at Red or White Restaurant.
Cakes were made for a cake sale at the Beach Party in Trowbridge Park in aid of Shelterbox.
We practiced Golf at the Driving Range in Bradford on Avon, and followed the Medieval heritage trail in Devizes.
In June 2009, Abbie Bygrave from St Augustine’s College won the Wessex Mead Young Chef competition by cooking a healthy meal for two people, beating 3 other young chef finalists. Her prize included working in a professional kitchen with a professional chef at Red or White restaurant in Trowbridge, to reproduce her winning menu for paying guests. On Saturday 1st August, over 20 hungry family and friends enjoyed Abbie’s lunch of chargrilled salmon fillet with a lemon and dill sauce and steamed baby vegetables and cappuccino cup - a light coffee mousse. It was beautifully presented and tasted wonderful.
As well as working in the community and fundraising, the members of the club enjoy social activities often designed to strengthen community or vocational awareness.
In August, we visited the driving range at Cumberwell, Bradford on Avon, and a Medieval Heritage walk around Royal Devizes Town. In Devizes we followed the trail of 15 plaques which took us around the perimeter of the old D shaped town – giving us a sense of how the medieval town would have been for the locals at that time.
Trowbridge Beach Party gave us excuse to become creative as the club members pulled together to run a very successful home made cake stall, in aid of ShelterBox. Shelter box is a Rotary charity that responds instantly to natural and manmade disasters by delivering boxes of aid to those who are most in need. Each box supplies an extended family of up to 10 people with a tent and essential equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless. These boxes cost around £490 each.
