The Rotary year ends on 30th  June each year, when a new President takes over, so I wanted to make the most of the last month as President.

Wiltshire Council had organized a Volunteers day at the Civic hall for the 6th June, so we arranged to have a stall where 4 of us took sessions with the aim to find new members. Unfortunately we did not find any, but it was interesting to see all the other organizations in the town and we did a little networking.

On Wednesday 9th June, Caroline and I were privileged to be able to help take all the pupils of Larkrise School to Longleat for the day as part of Kids out. We all had a fabulous day, the kids were all great to be with, we will definitely be inviting them along again next year.

The Wessex Mead Young Chef final at Trowbridge College on Thursday 24th June produced 5 wonderful meals from 5 very able young cooks, they came from St Augustine’s School, John of Gaunt and Lavington School. They had cooked a 2 course healthy meal for 2 for £9.  After taking into account a range of skills the judges, Vito Scaduto from Red or White Restaurant and Steve Lloyd from Trowbridge College, chose the overall winner was to be Holly from Lavington school.

To finish a wonderful year in Rotary, all the members were invited to a BBQ at my house, we had a really relaxed evening, with lots of food and laughter, it was a balmy evening and we were able to sit outside in the light evenings until quite late.

So that was the end of my year being president and the handover to the new Wessex Mead President Mark Davey took place at Red or White on Monday 28th June during our monthly business meal.

We start planning for next the Rotary year in June, so we met a couple of times to help form our plans, we will be doing our usual Carnival Quiz on 18th October and the Annual Bavarian night has been booked for Saturday 12th March. We will also continue with our Young Chef Competition, and Christmas collecting with the Lions but we have lots of other plans and exciting projects to look forward to.

The month of April flew by this year - 2 bank holiday Mondays in April and as we meet on mondays there was not much club time to do much at all!

However, we held our annual pub quiz, this year it was to benefit both Age Concern and the Children’s Hospice South West.  At our annual Carnival Quiz last September we asked Frydays in Frome Rd Trowbridge, to supply us with Fish and Chips, this proved to be so successful that we didn’t hesitate in asking them for the same deal this year.

The quiz had 8 rounds written by club members, and during the interval the 16 teams attending enjoyed their hot supper.  As always, we thank the staff at the Polish Club for giving up their only night off in the week to open the club especially for us, their support with our quiz nights is invaluable.  Over £300 was raised by Ann Jones and her committee by the event.

We also managed to fit in a business meeting where we were able to hand over a cheque to Alzheimer's Support,  from money raised at our Bavarian Night in February 2010.

Members of the Club were delighted to receive an invitation to the Town Gathering  from Trowbridge Town Council on Tuesday 27th April, as we were told we would receive an award for services to the town.  This was the first time that the club had been honored in this way, it shows that Wessex Mead Rotary are now recognized for the work that we are doing.

The Wessex Mead 8th Annual Bavarian Night dominated March for the Rotarians at Wessex Mead, most members were either bringing guests to enjoy the fun, or working at the event.Several of us dressed in not quite traditional Bavarian outfits spent the evening serving the guests with not quite traditional beer and food, whilst Karl’s Bavarian Brass started the party with not quite traditional music at 8pm and blew their last note at 11.30!  Caroline Smyth and her committee organized a really entertaining evening and over £1300 was raised.  This money will go towards Alzheimer's Support South West and the Wessex Mead Charity for a mobile health clinic for Street Children in Indonesia.

The world wide project ‘Thanks for Life – Polio Eradication’ dominated February for Wessex Mead Rotarians.  But we did find time to have some fun this month by means of a pub of the quarter and a ‘ghost walk’ around Frome town centre lead ably by Rotarian Ann Jones.  It was a very cold evening and the stories sent shivers down our spines, so we were glad to end up with a hot drink at the end of the evening in a local hotel.

Ann had also arranged with Trowbridge Library to display the photographs taken by entrants to our Young Photographer competition – this display lasted a fortnight in the main library.

After spending much of December collecting for charity, the New Year has brought more business into the lives of Wessex Mead Rotarians.  We have four events to organize in the next four months, so it is all hands required to make those final preparations.
