Wessex Mead (Trowbridge) Rotary Club

The Rotary Club of Wessex Mead (Trowbridge) are looking for new members to enable us to carry out more local and environmental projects

We meet every Monday evening as a club at Red or White, Trowbridge. Once a month we have a meal there to discuss our business, on the other weeks we either meet in committees or have arranged activities.

More than 1,000 children made homeless in Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia and living on the street are at high risk of disease due to the absence of medical and dental care. The Rotary Club of Jogja Merapi in Yogyakarta, in partnership with the KKY Clinic, propose to introduce a mobile health clinic to provide a basic screening and treatment service. The project will cover the operational costs of running the mobile clinic that will visit six locations in the Greater Yogyakarta area each week.

The total cost is approximately £11,250. Part of the funding will come from the Indonesian Club and the rest from Rotary Clubs in Wiltshire, Dorset and Somerset. The Rotary Club of Wessex Mead is co-ordinating this project and would welcome donations to be made out to ‘Rotary Club of Wessex Mead – Indonesian Project’ to be sent to Julia Davey, C/O Wiltshire Council, County Hall, Trowbridge, Wiltshire.

The idea of supporting this project came from Daniel Lyus, formerly the Mental Health Commissioning Officer for Wiltshire County Council, who had been a nominated by The Rotary Club of Wessex Mead to be a member of the Rotary Group Study Exchange team that visited Surabaya and Yogyakarta in the Spring of 2008.

The world wide project ‘Thanks for Life – Polio Eradication’ dominated February for Wessex Mead Rotarians.  But we did find time to have some fun this month by means of a pub of the quarter and a ‘ghost walk’ around Frome town centre lead ably by Rotarian Ann Jones.  It was a very cold evening and the stories sent shivers down our spines, so we were glad to end up with a hot drink at the end of the evening in a local hotel.

Ann had also arranged with Trowbridge Library to display the photographs taken by entrants to our Young Photographer competition – this display lasted a fortnight in the main library.

Caroline Smyth, who did a wonderous job organising the Big Breakfast event,  is also coordinating the Bavarian night which is coming up on 13^th March, there are a few tickets left.

Ann Jones is coordinating a Fun Quiz night which will include a fish and chip supper on 26^th April.
